Although this national park is barely 12 sq kms, it contains 59 islands and shoals. It is located on the shoreline of the Georgian Bay, and is accessible only by boat (visitors may park at Honey Harbour). Explore the interesting landscape, observe the various plant and wildlife, and learn of the Aboriginal history that dates back hundreds of years. Georgian Bay Islands National Park is open all year. Bigwind Lake Provincial Park This wild park is worth the journey off the beaten track. The park's historical landscape includes a ground moraine deposited by the last glaciation, Precambrian rocks, upland forests and lowland marshes, swamps and meadows. The park is open for day-use only and can be accessed via Highway 118 east from Bracebridge and then north along an unmaintained road, or by water from Bigwind Lake. As one of Canada's biggest provincial parks, Algonquin offers stunning scenery and excellent activities year round. During the winter, try snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Torrance Barrens - Dark Sky Reserve This conservation reserve covers 1990ha (4917 acres) of crown land near Torrance and is officially recognized as a Dark Sky Reserve for its lack of light pollution. Featuring ancient rock outcrops, rare plants and wildlife, and serene wilderness, Torrance Barrens is a great place for budding astronomers to observe a pristine, star-filled night sky, and for outdoor lovers to explore the many hiking trails.
