Bala, ON at a Glance
At the core of Ontario's Muskoka
cottage region, about 160 km (101 mi) north of Toronto
is the town of Bala, a picturesque spot that several hundred people call home
throughout the year, though this number can quadruple in the summer months. Many
people have paid a visit to Bala, including famed author Lucy Maud Montgomery
in 1922, and though she only stayed for two weeks, Bala's
Museum has a number of artifacts and memorabilia pertaining to the talented
Anne of Green Gables scribe. Those in search of a nightlife can cut a rug and
down a few bevies at the
Kee, a historic dance hall that acts as a nightclub and licensed concert venue
in Bala. Though most people head to Bala in the summertime to enjoy the lake,
autumn is also a great season to visit, as the annual Cranberry
Festival takes place on the weekend after the Canadian Thanksgiving. The festival
features plenty of vendors, live entertainment and performances to keep everyone
in the family busy.
